7 Bible Verses to Love Yourself

Today I’m revisiting one of my most popular blog posts from 2019. This blog post received 817 views. So for all my new readers, this is for you. I want to add that as believers' it’s easy to buy into a mindset of sacrificial living, however, I do not believe God intended for you to neglect yourself in the pursuit of serving others. The mindset that I hold as a believer is that the more you love yourself, then the more you’re able to love others with a cup that is full and overflowing. The intention of this blog post is to encourage self-love as an anchor to put out more love into the world. Enjoy!

People often forget one of the greatest commandments, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39, ESV). How can you love your neighbor as yourself if you lack self-love and care? So I ask you, are you following God's greatest commandment to love Him (Matthew 22:37) and others? You cannot do that without loving yourself too!

“You are not absent from the greatest commandment; you are the greatest commandment.” Tahira Neckles

When you step into knowing this, you will understand how, out of this love, everything else in life will flow: your health, a feeling of happiness, fulfillment, life's purpose, trust, and protection. So my question to you is this: Are you willing to let go of what the world says about love that you have to serve others first? No more sacrificing yourself. Hold on, embrace this new concept, and believe it is true that you are to pursue self-love and care for yourself first. Then you can give back and radiate that love outward into the world.

Below are 7 biblical scriptures to ponder and meditate upon (ESV):

  1. Colossians 3:14- "And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony."

  2. Proverbs 3: 15- "She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her."

  3. Proverbs 19:8- "Whoever gets sense loves his own soul; he who keeps understanding will discover good."

  4. 2 Timothy 1:7- "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid but gives us power, love, and self-discipline."

  5. Psalm 139:14- " I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."

  6. 1 Corinthians 13:13- "So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love."

  7. 1 John 4:18- "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love."
